If you want to eat nice Beijing style dumplings, I recommend “Peking Shui Jiao Wang” (北京水餃皇) in Wanchai. It is at No. 118, Jeffe Road, Wanchai. MTR exit: Wanchai, Exit C.

The price here, I must admit, is high compared with other dumpling restaurants. For a bowl of meat and vegetable dumplings, it costs at least HK$30 (about US$4). In other dumpling restaurants, it may be just HK$20 (about US$2.5).

But the high price means better quality.

I ordered a bowl of sour and spicy dumplings noodle (酸辣水餃麵). It tasted good. The sour and spicy soup base was not too spicy. The dumplings tasted fresh and the wrapping soft. It costed HK$38 (about US$5).

I also ordered a glass of soy bean drink. The drink came in a big glass and was only slightly sweatened – the least sweatened soy bean drink I have ever tried. Here in Hong Kong, restaurants sell heavily sweatened soy bean drink.

“Peking Shui Jiao Wang” seems to have been recommended in some travel guide books. I saw two tables of foreigners there – there are probably ten tables in the whole restaurant. The menu is all in both English and Chinese. The staff was eloquent in recommending dishes to a table of foreigners. No doubt, this restaurant is often frequented by foreigners.

If you land in Shenzhen airport and want to go to Hong Kong DisneyLand Park, please make sure that your flight lands early.

There are buses running from Shenzhen Airport direct to Hong Kong DisneyLand Park between 8:20am – 11am, every 20 minutes. The bus fare is RMB150. The bus will go via Huanggang border, and you will need to change to another bus of the same bus company after the border crossing. But this should be easy. Just follow the directions or the passengers in the same bus.

Ticketing:

Block A of Shezhen Airport (near the middle gate of the Arrival Hall), or Block B (next to the No.5 gate)

It is encouraging news that China’s jailed dissident Hu Jia won the EU top human rights award Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. When the world focused its attention on China’s engine of growth for the world economy, the award is a strong reminder that there are brave people on the mainland fighting for freedom of speech and human rights and who are jailed as a result of their belief and their pursuit.

China’s ambassador to EU, Song Zhen, wrote to the president of EU assembly, on the eve of the prize announcement, saying that “if the European Parliament should award this prize to Hu Jia, that would inevitably  hurt the Chinese people once again and bring serious damage to China-EU relations.” This is tantamount to a threat, which would have angered many people in Europe.

Will China one day learn to be a “civilized” country to match its rising economic power and aspriation to be a power on the world stage? I wonder.

Hu Jia, 35, a campaigner for civil rights, environmental protection and Aids advocacy, was sentenced to 3-1/2 years in jail on subversion charges in April after a one-day trial.

His mother said after his son was taken away: “ I hope my son would be the last person in China who is jailed because of his speech.”

Hu Jia has a daughter who was merely a few months old  when he was put in jail.  She will turn one next month.

The lovely Lovers’ Road

The landmark of the city, Zhuhai Fisher Girl. The marble statute looks much like a Greek or Roman statue – you will not associate it with a girl from a fisherman family in a southern China city. Totally dislocated.

However, if you look at the statue out of the context, it can be charming.

Yeli Island, a public island park

A view of Zhuhai

Zhuhai is unexpectely green, dotted with parks and palm trees. I once took the No.2 bus from Xiangzhou (香洲) area to Gongbei (拱北), where the border crossing between Macau and Zhuhai is, and passed, surprisingly, four parks on the way.

I ended up visiting the Haibin Park (海濱公園),along the Lovers’ Road. Palm trees and expanse of grassland with a view of the sea. Calm, and peaceful, with few visitors.

Just across the road, is the Jingshan Park (景山公園),which attracts more visitors. It has a 6000sq meters artificial lake with some water activities on offer, children playground facilities, and more importantly, some hiking routes to the top of the mountain to have a bird’s view of the city. On the way, you can see some rock formations in their interesting shape.

Parks in Zhuhai have no admission fee. A reason for you to love Zhuhai.
