with teachers and classmates in Castilapaella lunch in the school - great time!

每逢周五中午上完堂﹐這個小酒吧會為學生準備tapas(西班牙小盤的食物﹐有各式各樣) ﹐和夏日水果特飲Sangria(用紅酒﹑水果和小量的烈酒調制而成﹐清涼美味極了﹐我每次去餐廳﹐這是不變的選擇) ﹐我們常就這樣吃著喝著談著﹐幸福地迎來夏日的週末。

3. granda, cordoba

Hello Fun

我聽過D.E.

Anna

Salamanca: Mester
Granada: Research過後, 我都知道Castila不錯, 但很貴, 你有聽過Proyecto espanol 和I.D.E.A嗎?

Fun

Anna,

Dear Anna,

Hello Anna,

My name is Christine Lam and I am a Hong Kong-born Canadian currently doing an internship at a language company in Spain called Enforex. I came across your blog when I was doing research on Chinese people learning Spanish abroad, and I´m fascinated by your writing. I took five years of Spanish in Canada (three years in high school and two years in university), in part because I wanted to work in the US one day and Spanish would be useful there, but I´m trying to figure out what motivates people in Asia to learn Spanish. Would you mind answering some questions for me over e-mail? That would be enormously helpful and I´d really appreciate it!

Keep up the good work!

Cheers,
Christine

thanks for all information,it helps a lot. Anna.

Sometimes life turns to be different, but would be more interesting and worthwhile.

Think that i would gain more determination and belief from you.

Big thanks

Vivian

hola vivian

let me answer the questions about castila and accommodation first. I joined the weekend trip for two or three times. as you said, that was really fun but it was not cheap. So i did it a couple of times only.

it is not difficult to find an apartment there. there were posters in particular near the university area asking for roommates to share an apartment, or advertising for rooms/apartments to let. while the rent will come cheaper, it also means more trouble and hassle on your part. so for short term stay, you’d better avoid it.

now your question about the balancing act in life. it is very very hard, and i understand why you put to me the question. i’ve quited jobs a few times to either study or travel for an extended period of time, with pressures to bear from the family. it needs determination and strong will. but I don’t see it as “for personal pleasure”.
because it is not for this reason i did all the travels and worked hard to save money for overseas studies. i wanted to live a full life and to experience the world. that was my motivation. looking back, all the experience i’ve gained from travels and studies have helped me so much that i am glad i’ve done it. in short, if you have a strong belief in what you want to do, you will be able to do it.

best wishes

Hola Anna,

I’m doing some preparation before Spain Trip next year. Just curious how can you balance your personal life with some many trips and dreams.

I’ve dreamed to do lots of this kind of trips like yours, but life is too short. Also have the real life to handle, for money things, relationships, lots of daily stuffs to do.Sometimes you cannot give up all this just for personal pleasure. I just want to enjoy life at my will, but sometimes it would be very different as people expected, How did you make all this happen?

BTW, another thing is that the travel schedule i’ve received from Castila is very attractive, the budge is not that cheap. But i still wanna do some trips with classmates. It would be fun!
How did you make the trip while you were there?Do it all your own or join them together?

Another is for Accomodation there. The student flat there would be good, but i heard it was not that cheap comparing self rent apartment. What do you think? Is it easy to find an apartment there by my self?

Gracias para todos

Vivian

I was not asked for a return ticket. Actually I didn’t have one, because that year I went direct to study in the UK after staying in Spain.

No worries. in Castila, when i was there, there was a japanese girl who had studied in the school for almost one year. and i think at some point the school helped her with the visa.

Anna, thanks for your reply. Sorry I might be a bit over prudent but I’m really concerned about staying over 90 days without a visa. Didn’t you have any trouble with the Customs when they notice the date of your return air ticket. Or you actually wasn’t asked to present a return ticket?

Alice

yes, i didn’t apply for any visa. i just held the HKSAR passport.

that is a tight budget, but you can make do with it. just skip the expensive wkd trip arranged by the school through a travel agent. i also did the cooking myself then. it was fun shopping in a supermarket so different from a hk one.

my another piece of advice is, try to give yourself as much freedom as possible. so don’t commit yourself to a long course in the first place. see how you like the course and the school, and then commit. once you are in spain, you will find that you have many choices of schools.

take care and have a great experience
anna

in life you must have goals and reach them with passion. you are doing it. that is great. your message also means something to me because i know my writing means sth to people like you. thank you alice, for writing to me.

gambate!

Sorry I forgot to ask my question again. So you just hold a HKSAR passport and didn’t get any visa? I’m not sure about what you mean on a tourist visa? Apart from tuition and accommodation fees, do you think HKD3,000/month is enough for daily expenses if I’m cooking by myself. The budget also includes other social activities like going to a bar, cinema…etc sometimes.

Hi Anna,

You know what, your message is very supportive to me, really! Very often I’ve too many GOALS too little DETERMINATION. but this time I know I’m most passionate about going to Spain coz this is my dream since the Barcelona trip last year. I just don’t know if I’m just not determined enough for everything, or it’s just so natural for a fresh graduate like me to change her mind every 5 minutes. But your writings mean something to me, they are helpful and soulful. Thanks!

It’s funny that I barely know you in person but I feel like I wanna share my feeling with you. Probably influenced by what is said in “Into the wild” – “Happiness only real when shared!” Hope my over-passion would freak you out. Coz I’m just sentimental.

Alice

i was on a tourist visa. don’t be bothered by a student visa. staying in europe for more than 90 days is not a problem. just go in out. and the school will help you, in case you need help. so relax. my email is

mail at annatam.com

all the best

Alice, you have my great support for going to spain! now your questions. coming to where to study, the question sometimes is about which city to go rather than which school to go. I usually choose the city first before choosing the school. in this case, i highly recommend granada. it is so so great. the city is unique in the world in terms of atmosphere. you would know when you stay there for some time.

castila is a great school. but how good your experience is to a great extent depends on who your teachers and classmates are when u are there. i had terrific teachers and classmates then. so sometimes it depends on your luck really. but castila has very good teaching methods and it has really good environment – a garden, situated in a very nice location. i don’t know the school you named in another message. but generally speaking, the schools in spain have high standards. more important is that you choose a right city. my advice is – go to granada. if you are budget conscious, just choose a cheaper version. it doesn’t really matter. just enrol for a week first. that will keep your option open.

best
anna

Sorry, I swear this is the last question! Did you apply for a student visa as you were staying more than 90 days in Spain. It is a must to apply for a visa for a stay more than 90 days, right?

1 more question please! Have you heard of another Spanish school in Granada called “i.d.e.a. Instituto” (http://www.ideagranada.com) It seems to share similar style with Castila. The course fees of i.d.e.a is like 300 euros less!! So I wonder if you know about it. Grateful if you can help.

Alice

Hi Anna,

I happened to find your blog on the internet and I’m very impressed by your writing! And seeing all your experiences in Spain, I so wanna fly to there immediately!

I’m planning to learn Spanish in Spain. Castila seems to be a very good choice. But it also seems a bit more expensive than other Spanish schools as What I found on the internet. Do you think the one you studied in Salamanca (Can I know the name please?) is better or Castila is better? and the cost of living in which city is lower? I have to have the most economical plan as I’ve just graduated and saving so hard these months.

I really wanna know more about learning Spanish there. Do you mind giving me your email address?

Alice

hola vivian, no problem you quote my name. rafa is nice and funny, and is very popular among girls. :0 tell him i also send him my hug.

jan? that will be very cold. summer is really the best time to go. more activities, more people.

you can choose a shared apartment with other students. castila’s apartments are nice.

if you have further questions, just ask. i am happy to help.

take care

anna

Hola Ana,

I’ve wrote to Rafa for school issues. He is really so kind that replied my questions patiently. As i’ve mentioned you(hope you are not mind of this), He told me to send you a big hug for him. :)
A nice man!

I’m considering start the couses in Jan, is it cold there? And what kind of accommadation you think the best one?As i’ve totally no idea of that, sorry to cause you so many trouble :(

Thanks for all.

Vivian

Thanks Vivian, for your kind words and comment. I am sure you will have a memorable time in Spain. Going to Granada. That is the main thing. The city is unique in its feel and atmosphere.

Best wishes.

hi, Anna,

While searching for language school in Spain, happened to enter your blog. I like all your articles, the attitude of your life and your bravery. Really impressed me a lot.

Planned to go to spain several years ago, finally decided to quit the job and do it at the end of this year.

Maybe i will choose Castila as you did. Thanks for all your information. It helped a lot.

Vivian

Hi Carol,

Anna

Hi Anna,

(PREPARATORY D.E.L.E. EXAMINATIONS)

thanks for sharing~

Carol

hi, i am planning to go to Madrid for study Spanish, 同一年學費又大約要幾錢呢? thanks for your help.

Kev

Salamanca.

All the best!

hello fish,

hi, Anna

sorry…

Buneos Aires is a wonderful place to live in and tour around, but not a good place to learn spanish, because the argentian spanish is not very easy to understand and it has its way of pronunciation. pls use the search function of this blog to find out more. there are comments on this already. also suggest using search functions to find answers to your other questions. there are a few posts and comments on this already.

you can start from my recent one:
http://annatam.com/chinese/spanish-ecuador/

its me again, thx for ur suggestion, actually, i am almost enrol a school in salamanca, but then, my fd suggest to study in s. america or central amercia, coz of the cheaper course plus living cost. May i ask help from u again, can u recommend some city and school? actually, i search some forum and said Argentina BsAs is good place to learn, any suggestion from u? many thx again!!

Hi Belvelock,

nice to know you are part of the Castila gang. when i was in Castila, the teachers told me i was the first hong kong student the school had ever had. i think i am quite proud of it. :)

castila and granada gave me one of the happiest times in my life. very beautiful memory. thank you for letting me know that we have shared good memory.

anna

Hola,

Me llamo Belvelock. This is the first time I studied aboard and I really learnt a lot during the stay in Granada. I agree with you is that the teachers of Granada are very kind and friendly. Although I can’t speak so fluent in spanish, they always take care of me. Besides, I like Granada very much becuase of its mixture of culture.

Tengo mucho recuredos en Granada.

So happy to share with the one who have been there before.

Belvelock

edna, isla in salamanca is a good school. no worries. free tutoring, friendly teachers, tours, activities… not bad.

HI, anna

thx so much of your advice, wanna to know normally what is the deadline to apply the course? i m still searching the info and not yet decide… hehe

edna, as far as i remember, all the language schools in spain commence every monday or every two Mondays. I checked again the two schools i’ve been to, Castila in Ganada and Isla in Salamanca. They also have courses for beginners starting every Monday.

yes, provided you have met the attendance requirements, you will be given a cert, if you ask for one.

thx anna, may i ask beside ur school in granada, any school u suggest too? coz all the courses for beginners starts in the first monday of every month, i want to start the course in mid nov. so, until this moment, i still cant find one which is good and have the right course time for me.

Please suggest some school in these 2 cities if u have, many thx

By the way, if i finish a weeks courses, do they have a cert for me?

edna, am very sorry for not replying sooner. feel tired these days, maybe because of the weather. hey girls, no need to feel confused about choice of the city. just go. explore, taste, sample. go out there and you will know what you like and dont like.

my advice is, for better savoring a city, small is always better than big. so i definitely like granada and salamanca.

honestly, i don’t use msn, so that i am not bogged down in it. if you have questions, just list here. as many as you want. and i will try to answer.

anna

thx for the info, actaully, i will go with my fd, but still not decide which city is good for us. my fd seem interested in sevilla, but compare to salamanca, it is more expensive, so, until this moment, feel so confused. Would u mind we can talk in msn, coz i have more questions in my mind, many thx!! mine is chengsukwah@hotmail.com

Salamanca.

Cass, space

Hola Acha, thanks for your message and nice words.

The best way for you to know more about the school, is ask them to give you email contact of former students and write to the students to ask about the school.

hola anna!
http://www.estudiohispanico.com/index-granada.html

Sandy,

Granada.

hola!

gracias!
