Some former Mandarin teachers from Zhejiang University want to give Mandarin lessons in August in Hangzhou. Please see here.
Well, I don’t know how they are going to organize it. The former teacher of Zhejiang University at the forum said it is a simple plan. Yet, they plan to teach drama, intensive Chinese, etc. It cannot be too simple a plan, right?
Hangzhou seems all of a sudden to be a popular place for learning Mandarin. Friends of mine set the trend and started Manda School of Chinese, and then comes Tefl Academy, and now the former teachers of Zhejiang University. A flurry of activities. Well, good for those wanting to learn Chinese in Hangzhou, who have more choices now.

Hi,
I’m planning on going to China next year to study Mandarin. I’m looking at Manda as an option, but I don’t know if they’re reliable, etc. Anything you can tell me will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Hi Paige, it depends on how long you want to stay. If it is for a few weeks, and you are not expecting teaching of high standard (hard to find schools of high teaching standard in China, anyway), Manda can be the choice. The people there are nice and the city itself is better than many of China cities.
I am sure of one advice: if it is for long-term study, say for a few months, manda shouldn’t be your choice. the curriculum would be the problem.
Thanks Anna! I’m planning on going for around a year, so I’ll check my other options.
hi paige and anna:
i am a chinese boy.i saw your blog.to be honest,in my option, only studying in school isn’t a good choice.i interviewed some russian students.they learned chinese in hebei teaching university.shijiazhuang, the capital fo hebei province.chinese teachers just gave their lessons.but their chinese isn’t good.i advised they should talk more with citizens in our city.chinese is nice and friendly.i know seven foreign students 15–18 yrs live in the chinese family and study in school. it’s a good way.
Hi,
I am a chinese lady of 54 yrs old. I speak little chinese because we speak english at home and at work.
how do i improve on my chinese. i can use a chinese dictionary.
Mabel
Hi Mabel,
as with learning a craft, practice makes perfect. if spoken chinese is your main learning goal, you need to find opportunity to speak the language. finding a language exchange partner is a way. going to china to study for a period of time is another. or making use of skype or instant messaging to chat with people in chinese.
if you can use a chinese language, that will help you to expand your vocabulary. but it won’t help your oral Chinese much.
anna
thanks. Anna.
I find your blog v. interesting. Thanks for sharing with the world all the interesting information. I find it v. educational. My brother is taking me to Quiyang to visit for one week. My sister told me to take a flask to take hot water with me wherever I go. I don’t know how cold it would be although I think it is about 5 degree celcius at night and about 18 in the daytime. Do you have any idea?
Mabel
oh Anna. I forgot to mention when I will be going to Quiyang. It will be in Dec 9.
Mabel,
I’ve not heard of Quiyang. Which province does it belong to? If it is 18 celcius in the daytime, the temperature is pretty pleasant. you can buy hot-water flasks to keep warm easily in china and I believe the place you will stay has air-conditioning. so not to worry.
China’s observatory has a website giving weather information of every city in China. You may want to check it out.
Anna. The place is Quizhou and not Quiyang. Sorry about that. Wonder what will be the temperature like in Dec.
I know of Quzhou in Zhejiang province, but never heard of Quizhou.
